Project

Overview

Crafting a new identity for my hometown where heritage meets the wild.

Palmer is a small farming town in the heart of Alaska’s Matanuska-Susitna Valley, known for its giant vegetables, rich traditions, and rugged natural beauty. As the state’s agricultural hub and home to the Alaska State Fair, it’s a place where reindeer farms, sled dogs, and salmon runs are part of everyday life. Moose roam freely, eagles fly high, and local pride runs deep.

This redesign aimed to capture that unique blend of heritage and wilderness, creating a mark that honors Palmer’s roots while welcoming its next chapter.

Design

problem

As a community largely made up of lifelong residents, Palmer holds tightly to its traditions and identity.

The challenge was to create a logo that honors Palmer’s legacy while reflecting its growth and forward momentum. I set out to design a brand identity that would resonate with longtime locals and newcomers alike, something that felt both familiar and refreshed.

The goal was to encapsulate the three defining pillars of Palmer’s identity: its deep agricultural roots, its strong culture of high school sports, and the iconic landscape that defines its skyline. The final design needed to be timeless yet modern, preserving recognizable symbols of the town while elevating them with clarity, versatility, and a renewed sense of pride.

the

solution

I set out to capture the town’s character into a mark that felt both grounded and enduring.

The design centers on two iconic landmarks: the town’s water tower—an emblem of resilience and community, and the mountain that anchors the skyline, Matanuska Peak. Together, they form a visual shorthand for pride and permanence, refined for clarity and modern use.

The Final

Touch

To further root the identity in local pride, I drew from the spirit of Palmer High School, a cultural cornerstone of the town.

In a place where Friday night football draws generations to the bleachers and alumni return in their letterman jackets, the high school is more than just a place, it’s a heartbeat. The typeface mirrors the bold, nostalgic lettering found on the school’s jerseys and helmets, while the color palette features Palmer High’s signature blue; a hue that not only represents school pride but also mirrors the icy tints of nearby Matanuska Glacier.

By echoing these familiar elements, the final design balances simplicity with a deep respect for the town’s history. A logo built to grow with Palmer, welcoming new faces while honoring the legacy of those who’ve always called it home.
